Be Swept Away by a Grand Storyline and Amazing Costumes During The Merry Widow

Fans of fine arts, get excited! This Saturday, The Merry Widow returns to Houston Ballet with a delicious cocktail of witty and intriguing characters based on the famous 1905 operetta by Franz Lehár. Choreographed by longtime friend to the company and esteemed British choreographer Ronald Hynd, this lavish story ballet is filled with rich music and sweeping drama as decadent lives intertwine in early 20th century Europe. Check it out on Saturday, June 1st at Wortham Theater Center!

When a secret romance is uncovered between Count Danilo and the glamorous, wealthy widow Hanna Glawari – a former peasant girl who’s transformed herself into high society – their homeland and its aristocracy plot to preserve their love affair while also saving themselves and the principality of Pontevedro from bankruptcy. With gorgeous costume and scenic designs by the acclaimed Roberta Guidi di Bagno, The Merry Widow will enthrall audiences with its humor and grandeur.

The Merry Widow had an obstacle-filled route to success during the turn of the 20th century. The librettists and producer of Vienna’s Theater an der Wien – where The Merry Widow first premiered – initially had the opera set by Austrian composer Richard Heuberger. However, after Heuberger’s music was deemed unsatisfactory, the secretary of the Theater suggested Franz Lehár, who had not previously composed this kind of comic operetta.

The initial performances of The Merry Widow earned some criticism, but within a few years the operetta had become an international hit. Now, the piece is Lehár’s most famous work and enjoys regular performances across the globe.

The Houston Ballet presents The Merry Widow as part of its 50th anniversary season. As the troupe has grown from 16 dancers to 60, Houston Ballet has always maintained the highest standards – attracting global talent and arming them with classical training that allows seamless movement across all genres.
